If you like your two-wheel racing sporting V-twins and saddlebags, you’ll be happy to hear that MotoAmerica has just added another race to the King of the Baggers series. The popular big-bore shootout is expanding to a six-round format for 2022, with the season opener kicking off at the Holy Grail of US motorcycle racing: Daytona International Speedway.
In hindsight, the fact that the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers Championship will launch its 2022 edition on the high banking of Daytona seemed inevitable. As MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey explained, “The popularity of last year’s three-round King of the Baggers series was such that it left our fans, teams, sponsors, and racers wanting more. So, we are giving them what they want—a six-race championship held at the three tracks that the baggers competed on last year with an additional three rounds.…”
There you have it—the reason why, on March 10–12, spectators will see baggers whipping around the 31-degree banks of Daytona International Speedway for the first time. Fittingly, that first race will be held in conjunction with the Daytona 200, which takes place during the popular Bike Week rally.
From there, the series heads to Road Atlanta in Georgia on April 22–24, where last year’s opening round was held. The next stop is June 3–5, when KOTB arrives at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, and iconic WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca—site of last year’s finale—will play host on July 8–10.
The last two rounds of the 2022 series will be at tracks that have just been added to the King of the Baggers schedule. Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota, the home state of Indian Motorcycle, will host the event on July 29–31, and New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey, is where the final race takes place on September 9–11.
Last year’s King of the Baggers Championship came down to the wire, with Harley’s Kyle Wyman and Indian’s Tyler O’Hara duking it out in the final race at Laguna. Wyman prevailed, taking home the 2021 MotoAmerica KOTB trophy.
Those two riders are again involved in the Harley-Davidson and Indian factory efforts, with Wyman on the H-D Screamin’ Eagle Road Glide and O’Hara piloting the Mission Foods S&S Cycle Indian Challenger. It’s gonna be another wild season.
