Pulsetech Xc100-P Xtreme Charge Battery Charger $100
While you can't always prevent a battery from losing its charge, the Xtreme Charge Battery Charger makes it as unlikely as possible. It juices up discharged batteries, maintains the charge and even helps extend battery life with its patented Pulse Technology. PulseTech claims that 80 percent of batteries die from lead sulfate buildup on the battery plates. The company says that pulsing the current will reduce and occasionally reverse sulfation, thus restoring a battery to useful condition.
Because there was no x-ray diffraction equipment in the Cruiser garage, my tests were simple. I grabbed two apparently dead batteries and hooked them up (one at a time) to the Xtreme Charger. The unit couldn't be easier to use: Just connect the leads to the battery (clamps and ring terminals are provided) and plug in the device. The charger managed to get battery 1 juiced, though the cell immediately began losing charge once disconnected. A separate battery tester indicated the situation was terminal. The charger then fully restored battery 2-which our tester confirmed was in good condition.
The fact that battery 1 could not be resurrected can't be held against the charger-not every battery is salvageable. And it did bring battery 2 back from the grave. I'd call that a success.
The charger is a bit pricier than others, but with the promise of extended battery life it's certainly reasonable. I give it a hearty thumbs-up. -Evan Kay
